In 2003 at the Quadra Island
Lightwork retreat Scott Robinson and Julia Watson fell into
conversation about their individual dreams of living in an ecovillage
and found that they were remarkably similar. Scott had long been
dreaming of ecovillages and intentional communities. His mom
lives in a co-op on Hornby and his father is part of a camping co-op so
he had seen working examples and had been sketching layouts for
years. Julia had been actively seeking a group to form an
intentional community on Cortes Island. She knew that if she was
ever going to own land she wouldn’t be able to afford it by
herself. As a single person she liked the idea of living in
community and borrowing other people’s kids. At last she had
found a kindred spirit in Scott.
By September Scott
and Julia were having meetings once a week, to begin to lay out the
foundations and principles of a Lightwork Ecovillage. Krista
Morrison quickly joined the meetings bringing her invaluable YES,
humour and enthusiasm. Keith Grennan brought his extensive co-op
experience and trusty computer to the group a few months later.
This core group met once a week visioning, documenting, dreaming
and setting the energy for the Lightwork Ecovillage.
In
the summer of 2004, about a year after the first meetings we began to
scout for land. Different areas were considered but nothing very
noteworthy was seen until they visited Hope Point, Gambier
Island. Within 2 months the 80 acre parcel atop Hope Point was
ours. Views and all.
This makes it sound very
simple, and in some ways it was, but in other ways it was a grueling 2
months of researching the property, finding a mortgage, a lawyer,
investors and the hardest of all…. getting past the tape-loop in the
head saying “Are you crazy? This will never work. Get out
while you can!” Some pretty dark energy tried to attend the
meetings and fear seeped in wherever it could. But nothing could
break our alignment and clear intent. And so the Lightwork
Ecovillage was born.
