Building a Composting Toilet

We decided to build a simple composting toilet as our first building project. The materials were inexpensive and the results excellent. We have been using the toilet for a year now; it has started to compost and has no smell at all. This is a sealed system with zero pathogens going into the earth. This is what we did:

We decided that using the largest RV tank we could find was a great way to go to create the sealed chamber needed for humanure creation.

The assembly that holds on the ventilation pipe is added.

The man at the RV store used the toilet seat as a template to cut out the hole for us.

And then simply bolt the toilet seat directly onto the RV tank.

PVC pipe works great as the ventilation tube, there needs to be lots of airflow.

The composting toilet could be put anywhere, we had designed it to go into a beautiful stand of young fir trees.

Keith uses stone from the natural environment to makes stairs.

The stone stairs connect to the path that leads to the private composting toilet.
