It has been "Operation Reuse" on the last few work parties.Neighbouring
Camp Fircom was tearing down some old cabins and we were invited to
come and salvage whatever we thought was useful.Which to
our way of thinking, is pretty much everything! We jumped at the
opportunity with crow bars in hand and came out with many truckloads of
material.Windows were the first order of business. Then
we were on to fir floorboards, a propane stove, a chest of draws, some
pots, a battery charger, random 2X4's, and the grand prize???? A cast iron tub.It took 4 of us to lift it out the bathroom window and 6 of us to get it into the truck! It
was a pretty handy piece of conscious creating as we had already picked
out a spot for such an item and had begun clearing space for it.Re-using is really one of the most satisfying of the R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).Given
the cost and effort it takes to buy things and then cart them over on
the water taxi it was wonderful to come across so much bounty close to
home.Thank you Camp Fircom!
The Ecovillage crew put on their gloves and spent 3 days wrangling windows out of walls, doors out of frames, and floor boards off the floors!
A big part of the task was getting the salvaged materials up the steep hill to the Ecovillage. Scott masterfully loaded up Eddie for another delivery of items to their new home at the Ecovillage.
Keith seriously got into the groove of tearing windows out of walls.
A lot of windows were salvaged! It takes a lot to get a window to the island so to have them already on the island was incredibly valuable.
The crew did a thorough job!
And had fun too!
It was incredibly satisfying to liberate materials bound for the land fill.
One of the big scores was this cast iron bathtub. This crew plus Krista picked this 500 pound tub up and passed it through a a window! This tub already has a place waiting for it under the Hawk House deck where a bathroom is being created.
A satisfying weekend of salvaging.
On the Ecovillage land a beautiful bountiful garden is growing!
The zucchini castle growing a plethora of zucchini!
Sunflowers!
People and plants all growing together at the Ecovillage.
It is awesome to watch things grow. This has been an abundant Spring for the Ecovillage.
